My sister is a BBQ F A N! When we would travel out of town to work, she would always seek out “the best” BBQ joints in our travel route for chowing down on some good ole’ beef and pork. One thing I have noticed about this was that finding a juicy BBQ joint was hard to identify. Kristie determined “the best” by the taste of their dry- rub, center-cut pork ribs. This was the beginning of a search for the best tasting ribs around.
Recently, while on the road, I noticed this little hole-in-the wall spot and I’m here to tell you and KristieMiss, that this is the business!
Woodpecker’s Backyard BBQ is finger lickin’ good. It’s located 30 miles from downtown Jacksonville, and off the beaten path in Orangedale, Florida (aka:The middle of nowhere). Not only is the food spectacular but the customer service will blow you away.
There, you’ll meet super sweet southern gals with big smiles and helping hearts. Woodpecker’s is decorated simply with eight tables inside; five bar stools, and five outside tables. The outdoor seating will give you an authentic southern BBQ feel under the great old southern oaks and within a shout, you can smell the air from the St. Johns River just down the way.
The sweet tea is just like it should be- southern SWEET which ties in with the atmosphere of the southern moss hanging from huge old hard timber in the area.
If you like smoked meat and homemade southern sides, this is the place for you. While there was no wait while we were there, I’ve seen a trail waiting at other times so the wait tells a story in itself. If you have to stand in line, I can promise it’s worth it. I must say, this might just be the best BBQ in NE Florida.
To find this southern gem, travel south along the St. Johns river on SR13. It might be out of your way but the view is beautiful and this BBQ is well worth it. If you are a biker this is a MUST ride. It is a great suggestion for bikers here for Bike Week festivities. The ride is just breathtaking with many docks and parks along the river.
If you get a chance to stop in and eat, this is a slice of BBQ heaven and I’ll bet you will meet the owner, Lisa Marston working side-by-side with her staff to make each bite perfect. Make sure to let her know, Katie from Chicks Down South sent you. I had the pleasure of chatting with her and could not wait to tell you about her and this fantastic BBQ spot.
My suggestions:
Whether you’re just looking for BBQ, dropping by, making your trip a “day spot” or just going to check it out, I hope, I’ll see ya’ there cause I’ll be back and soon! See ya’!
