Well, everyone. You would have thought it was our performance! I’m not kidding! Sunday, our first grandson had his first performance in front of a crowd. He’s only been at the Christian pre-school 8 times and music is only 1 day a week so he had only had 4 opportunities to know the music, words and hand signs. He’s been a stay-at-home child up until now so even with the stress of learning a new environment, new people and the worry “Mommy may never come back”, we had no idea how he would do.
My daughter told me to be in the sanctuary at 10:50 a.m. because the performance began at 11:00. I thought, “Are you serious? 10:50! “ I was there at 10:00 a.m. and saved almost the entire 2nd row of seats. (In our church, we’re asked not to save seats but what could I do?) Certainly the entire family would show up for this grand event. ( And they did, including great grandmother and friends!)
The night before the performance, we were all talking, texting and discussing his outfit, shoes, and pondering what was going to happen on stage. We wondered if he would see his Mom and Dad and cry to get to them. We didn’t know if he’d stay in line, remain with the other children, sing as best as he could, know the hand signs or need help going and coming. He’s not yet 3 so we had no idea what to expect and we were all just so excited. The texts, calls and wonderings were flying!
It was hard to sleep but finally sleep became inevitable. The next day when the doors opened of this small community church, the chairs were filled back to front. Our family and friends filled the 2nd row. We had the best seats in the house and were really on pins and needles. To say the very least, we were so, so, so (3 times for emphasis!) excited to look for that little boy to come into the room. At the appointed time, the side door of the church opened and in the almost 40 children came. Our boy landed almost in front of us and we were beyond thrilled! He did not seem to see us and behaved well enough with the exception of lying on the floor, bending down and eventually ended up in the arms of the teacher’s helper. In time he was placed on stage and as the music played, he swayed. It was the cutest sway i’d ever seen and by the time the song was over he had mastered the movements, outstretched his arms at the words of “in Jesus name” and even pursed his lips as he worked so diligently to rock with the music.
The performance was a success and the crowd went wild! ( Our crowd especially!). As I drove home from that event, tears streamed from my eyes. My heart was full of joy of watching my daughter and son-in -law as happy as I’ve ever seen them. Both of them so very proud, smiling and doting over their boy. Pleasure! Pure pleasure! It was a memorable day for us all watching this soul grow and prosper. I out loud thanked God for His great blessing of bringing that little life into our homes. I thanked Him for the opportunity to experience such love, devotion and outpouring of hope for his success. I asked God, the Creator of all to anoint him, indwell him and cause him to seek the great God of All. I have every confidence He will do that for that performance was His too; “in Jesus name”.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
