For some time we’ve been wanting to get a couple of barn-yard kitties. There is already a kitty inside and of course I have my puppy, Sophie but I just felt there was a need to have some outdoor cats to play in the yard.
This week I had to go by my insurance office to sign some papers. The agent was scurrying two little baby kittens along the sidewalk and eventually brought them both inside. One was a tabby and the other variegated grey. Both were meowing and apparently hungry as the lady broke off of her own chicken sandwich and leaned down towards two open mouths. In a short time, they were stretched out on the office carpet and cleaning themselves. They weren’t fat but they were certainly happy.
The conversation went from insurance to barn-yard kitties and before I knew it, I had two kittens in a paper box heading out the door. I am fat and happy both! Ha!
Before getting them home, they wanted out of the box so I let them loose in the truck. Both found a spot between two firm objects and took a nap and soon we were driving up the gravel road. I really wanted them to be barn-yard cats so I took them straight to the barn and shut the door. From there, I went into the house, got cat food, prepared a litter box and a bowl of water. They would have a hay bale for a bed and all would be well.
Since the kittens have taken up in the barn, things have gone pretty smoothly. They are a hop, skip and a jump from the chicken pens and every evening they are secured inside the barn and let out in the morning. Within a week or so, the barn will be left open for them but I wanted them to get a feel for the place before such freedom.
Both have gained a little bit of weight (We like to eat around here!) and they are truly beginning to be fat and happy! They are not very excited about being around the chickens and actually, the chickens don’t know what to think of them either. Both are new to each other.
I have not introduced the inside kitties to “Grey Boy” and “Lucky” but in time, they should be fast friends. Right now, the big objective is to get them settled into their new barn so they can rule the roost along side the chickens.I’ll keep you posted!
