Rest in peace Blue Ivy. We were saddened to find our beloved Blue Ivy gone this morning. Blue Ivy was one of the 3 Americauna hens in our flock. We only had 3 that would lay blue eggs.
My youngest daughter and I began our day as usual scouting for eggs, preparing the morning food tins and running fresh water for the flock to combat the hot day ahead. Blue Ivy was missed and Kristie and I discussed her not coming out of the coop with the others.
Even though she did not come out, we thought she may be sleeping in and left after opening all of the coops and inspecting all of the runs. Everyone appeared happy and the day began on normal footing.
As I prepared to leave to take care of a few things outside of our home, there was a cry from the barnyard area. It was Kristie. She had found Blue Ivy and was devastated at her loss. I told her not to come and that I would take care of getting her out of the coop but she was a trooper and came any how. We carefully gathered her warm body up and laid her on the ground. She would not make it but we had no idea what happened.
The loss of Blue Ivy was particularly hard because it is our first loss since building the 5 runs and raising up to 47 birds. She was our first loss since the babies had become adults and we were so looking forward to her laying blue eggs. She was just getting of age to produce.
Raising any kind of animal can bring about worries and hurts. We name our animals and they are pets to us. We don’t raise them for the eggs although that is a perk, especially as we’re getting close to a dozen a day now.
We’re going to miss Blue Ivy. She was a beauty and has our hearts torn and hurting.
RIP Blue Ivy.
Josie
