A year ago Easter I was given 4 yard birds by my son-in-law, daughter and grandson. When the chicks came to my yard, I was really not equipped to care for them but with time built a run and in February purchased twenty more birds! Yes, I said twenty! Then, I was obligated to provide more runs for the breeds. Now I have 5 runs and 4 coups.
I now, am the proud owner of a total of 6 Buff Orpington, 5 Americauna, 2 American English, 5 Sex link, 5 Rhode Island Red and 1 Silver Wyandotte. And, would you believe that before I purchased the twenty had ordered from a hatchery 25 which will come May 8. Oh my!
Raising the chicks has certainly been fun. It’s an every day event. It’s not like raising a cat where you can put food out for the day and that’s it. These birds require “tending to”. Every evening, I close them in their pen for safety and every morning I open their gate from their coup to their run. They are a mess so watering them is an every day event too. Not only do they walk, jump and fly into their water but they drop things in there which requires me to clean out their watering container every single day. They need real one-on-one attention and every single day.
I think about my own life and what a “mess” I am. I think about how God “tends” to me in ways that I cannot do for myself. I’m reminded of how he gives me air to breath, and all of the staples of life; many of which I take for granted.
Those birds are on my mind every single day. I am on God’s mind every single day. I will live for Him and be thankful.
