By the time we boarded the Staten Island Ferry, which was free by the way (Yay!), it was windy and about 76 degrees. That’s why Mama always said, “When traveling always carry five things for sure: a quarter, a jacket, clean underwear, a flashlight and a dress. So, again, Mom nailed it! We needed our jackets!
When finally we wrestled ourselves and got a place on the free ferry, we realized right away that we needed to be on the top deck if we were going to see anything and get any good pics so we meandered through the large groups and found a nice place on top. We love being on top by the way!
Aside from being quite cool and breezy, we found the ride to be as expected, lumpy, and bumpy. The smell of the ocean and the hum of the engine just caused us to feel as if we were going to see our expected, “Lady Liberty” along the New York/New Jersey skyline. And we did. She was a beauty too.
It was no surprise that we would feel, once again, proud to be American.
According to the park service information:
Liberty Enlightening the World
“The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933.
We found our trip to see Lady liberty to be one of great excitement and pleasure. There are several ticket opportunities: grounds only where you go and spend time at the feet of Lady Liberty, Pedestal tickets where you can go inside of the pedestal and museum, or Crown tickets allowing visitors to visit the pedestal, museum and the Fort Wood level.
If you go, you will not be disappointed at whatever level you choose to enjoy. The Lady welcomes the tired and hungry! “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
