Islamorada Sandbar: Florida Keys

There is only one way to get there and that’s by boat! The Islamorada Sandbar is located off Windley and Upper Matecumbe Keys in the channel between Holiday Isle and Whale Harbor in Florida.

The crowd is diverse and depending on the weekend things can get cray- cray as in crazy!  Year long, because of the weather this place basically runs on its own.   One thing that is pretty consistent is the weather and it is a great place to relax and enjoy the bluest water you’ve ever seen.  Because it is a small island, there are limited areas for activities.  The stretch is long and shallow but along the way you can see boats galore!

Anchoring the vessel on which you come to the island is important because you want to end up in an area that may be more kid or family  friendly than some where adult activities are the mainstay.

It depends on what you are looking for as to where to doc.   Hardcore party goers know to arrive early. They tether off smack-dab in the middle of the fun and be prepare to spend the day swimming, drinking, blasting music and jumping from boat to boat ’till dawn. For those planning to depart before sunset they learn to drop anchor out a bit and make their way into the crowded areas by foot or float.

For those who don’t have a vessel,  plan on hitching a ride to the sandbar – and good luck!  Pay attention to the abandonment law which if I understood correctly, means you can not board a vessel and then vacate with the intention of not returning. There may be a safer alternative than hitching a ride such as, Robbie’s rental a boat for a two day rental. (Tell them Chicksdownsouth.com sent you.)

If you were thinking about bring the youngsters, Think again! This is an adult party. However, as mentioned above, there is a more kid-friendly area and I did notice a smaller scale family style sandbar being created just south of the large party. This will have been my third year visiting the Islamorada Sandbar during Memorial weekend. I suggest bring an umbrella, sunscreen, comfy float, food, drinks and a ton of your closest friends.
