Will You Feed My Chickens While I Go on Vacation?
Well, I signed up for the Alaskan Cruise for the fall. To be clear, I invited all of the children and agreed to pay 1/2 of their cruise costs. Yes, I realized that the May Keys trip took up a week of work vacation time but I was hoping it might work out to go on a cruise in the fall. So, it ends up that the vacation and work schedules for everyone just didn’t work out, so my youngest daughter and I will board the deck together this autumn. We’re pretty excited about the trip.
After signing up and plunking down a couple of thou ($$$$), I realized that I hadn’t taken care of the most important thing on the home front. Who in the Sam Hill will feed my flock? That had not even come to mind and for 13 whopping days! Uh! Oh!
Having a dog, cat or cockatiel is pretty simple in terms of getting a feeder. Here’s the conversation. “I’m going on vacation and need someone to feed my cat for a couple of weeks. Could you drop by and do that for me?” The reply by most: “Sure. I can help you out”. “Could you feed my dog,” you might ask. The answer would most likely be, “Yes, no problem”.
But, here’s what happens when you ask anyone about keeping 41 chickens, 3 roosters, 2 cats, 2 exotic birds, and 2 dogs.
“Hey, I paid for a cruise to go on the Alaskan trip. Can you feed my chickens and animals?”
Response- “Chickens? How many are there now?” “Do I have to go in the pens?” “Is that black rooster still running free?” “How many times a day do I have to feed them?” “Are there snakes out there?” “Oh, I have to come back at dusk to close them in?” “Uh, I have to let them out after daybreak?” “How do I empty their old water and put in fresh water?” “That means I’ll have to go in the pens!” “How many chickens did you say?” “Uh!”… “MMMM”…”ehhh”….
Everybody… That’s how it’s standing so far. I’ll keep you posted.
