Life with purpose can be rewarding and Thanksgiving is a time that we can put to the test the very words of our Father in heaven. Everyone needs a boost of confidence along with uplifting moments. How can we achieve this? Is it simple or complex? God has spoken and during this season of thanks we can follow His commands and rise ourselves by lifting others.
A great old manuscript says, ” Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” By that we rise by lifting others. This helps us see that our reward comes to us later out of kindness.
The Bible says in Luke 6:38; “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
Thanksgiving is a time to reach out to others and reflect on things we have. This year, I tried to look deep into my own friends and family. Often I find myself reaching to help those in need whom I don’t even know but of late, I’ve thought about helping those that I see and speak to everyday. Sometimes it seems that our closest friends or family are going through something they may not feel a need to burden us with. This year I decided to reach out to a few individually in such cases. Some took my offer and others declined but the feeling of gratitude was felt on both sides.
Each of us have a responsibility to our family and friends. It is important and necessary to meet their needs as they should seek to meet ours. Truly, it’s give and take. As the song goes, “That’s what friends are for” and certainly family should be included.
And then we have those whom we don’t know. In the Thanksgiving season, we can appreciate all that we have and then we can help those who are in need. But I’ve had a wondering lately. Have we as Americans stopped letting people help us? Have we stopped helping others? Have we stopped accepting true acts of kindness? Have we stopped giving true acts of kindness?
Things as simple as assisting others with groceries. There is a grocery store employee around the corner from my house that always asks to help me load my car. Most of the time I say “no thanks, i’ve got it”. Since having my son, the help has come in handy. I’ve noticed a sense of joy each time he assists me. We chit-chat and most of the time I learn something about his wife or family. These are simple acts of kindness that go a long way and help me in my appreciate and gratitude for the small things. These things make me thankful. They make me want to extend a hand to others and they help me see that I must accept a hand from others.
There are so many acts of kindness, some that cost and others that are just gestures. It is the effort and condition of the heart that truly matters. So, with that said, “Sparkle and Shine” throughout the year and not just at Thanksgiving.
