Daddy loved books. When we were young we had a slew of them and were encouraged to read. Daddy and Mama both grew up on farms during the depression and said that because money was scarce they had to “do with what they had”. While books were important, there was little money to purchase them. By the time my parents had us, they were none the richer but things were more available and school systems and cities had libraries for lending books. Borrow we did.
My father received his elementary and high school education in a one room school house in Hampton, SC. His oldest sister was his 4th grade teacher. He used to tell us it was one of his most difficult years. As he put it: “I was less than studious”. Over the years something definitely happened as he grew , loving learning, collecting books as he raised his familly and with my Mother’s encouragement would send all three of his children to college.
Daddy’s vision of building his own home would be one of granduer and would include a very large library of books . His salary, as a Civil Service worker prevented the granduer but the dream did not go away.
When he and my mother built their very modest and small “Jim Walter” home on Crystal Springs Road in Jacksonville, Florida, the entire back room was built to accommodate shelves for books. While the home was small with only a tiny kitchen, and 3 small bedrooms, the back room was built for literally hundreds and hundreds of books.
Our parents knew then what we know as bloggers and educators now, reading is essential to being informed and progressive. According to a Google search, Bill Gates has a “5 Hour Rule” in which he commits 5 hours a week to reading and focussed learning.
“The 5-hour rule involves spending five hours a week, or one hour each working day, focused on deliberate learning. This means setting aside time to give your full attention to learning and development, without getting distracted by other work.”
As a blogger, it is important to be “up on the times” so get your groove on in terms with your own schedule for reading. Let us know the latest book you’ve read.
I’m reading “Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands” by David Tripp. I’ll let you know my thoughts on it.
See You Tomorrow
