Thanksgiving Travel

It’s a mad house out there folks!  We’re traveling this Thanksgiving season. We spent a full day traveling to the airport, spending time in the air and in the airports.  It’s been a long day.

As we were experiencing the mad house, I was thinking about you and wondering if you’re traveling or staying at home?  The last time I traveled for Thanksgiving was when our family went to New York City to see the Thanksgiving Parade.  In truth, I hardly remember the hoopla of the travel.  I remember most, the cold weather in NYC, the massive crowds lining the streets to view the huge air balloons and the fact that there was almost no where to find the traditional Thanksgiving dinner on the last Thursday in November.

Traveling out of town to be with family is an exciting event but can be stressful at the same time.  Here are 5 tips, beyond the normal confirm you were invited to the family event, pack your suitcase, confirm tickets, check in baggage and get to the airport….These ideas will  help your day go more smoothly.

 Tips for Travel

1.  Before going, downsize as much as you can.  Try your very best to pack everything in your checked baggage so that your carry-on is light and easy to maneuver.

2.  Pack snacks or even a lunch box (if you must) to help you and your children during the flight.  Today, on our trip, due to the weather situation, the flight attendants were kept in their seats due to the weather thus there was a late serving of snacks.  ‘Good thing that my daughter had snacks in the bag for her child.

3.  To alleviate stress, expect traffic and expect crowds. With it being the holidays, everyone in the Sam Hill will be at the airport so if you’re expecting Sam or Hill, you’ll be in the best frame of mind!

4.  Waiting for baggage and trying to get from one place to the next will be taxing for many. If you expect that, everyone will do what is necessary to meet the needs of each other. Mom’s will entertain young ones, husbands will rush to get baggage, wives will assist husbands in the “next” event on the agenda and with everyone looking for ways to help out, the trip will be more successful and happy.

5.  Most of all, have fun and enjoy yourself.  Discuss the trip before hand with all parties.  Help each person realize that there will be stress, there will be a lot of people, there will be times of some confusion but in all of that each person has a stake in the happiness of the event.
