A donut seems to be one of America’s classic breakfast go-to’s. Aside from the fact a warm donut is merely heaven in your mouth, these wonderful small unplanted pasteries are an easy grab for any age. Casual as they might seem, this fluffy round piece of heaven can be served even at a wedding and variations of the donut such as the “cronut” sell for as much as $5.00 each in New York City.
Traveling the southeast for work has lead me to many different cities where I have had a chance to try all kinds of bakeries and donuts. I must tell you, The Donut Shoppe here in my hometown blows them all away. The bakeries’ hours are contingent on the sales. In other words, when they sell out, the workers go home. Most days, they open 5am – 1pm, 7 days a week. The Donut Shoppe makes the donuts from scratch daily and sells out quickly on weekends and holidays. Sundays are huge due to the church crowd feeding the masses.
If you haven’t had one of their donuts, you haven’t lived. For me to drive almost 30 miles one way for a donut, you know it must be good and certainly I did this for my son who needs to experience this delectable taste! ( Ha, Ha!) This gem has been hidden in Jacksonville, Florida since 1962. Yes, those larger donut and pastry shops are good but The Donut Shoppe takes you back to simple, family owned, friendly, handmade donuts. I remember eating donuts from here as a child, on our way to church when we fed the masses!
My favorite donut is the “ugly” which is an apple fritter. Next would be the standard glazed which is “Oh So Sugary with the perfect fluff”. All the donuts are simply amazing, just depends on your taste buds that day. Their cost is low and therefore they only take cash, so be prepared when visiting.
Here is a list of there current donuts
Yeast Raised Donuts
Cake Donuts
If you are ever in the area of Northeast Florida, this is a MUST visit. Make sure to visit early to try the favorites. Remember, this joint sells out quickly. Take your donuts to the river bank, drop off at the St. Johns River walk or sit under the hundred year old Treaty Oak and enjoy the breeze under that lonely thang’ or if you live in the city, go home and enjoy your favorites. That’s what we did and yes, we ate one on the way home too!
