Motion sickness, many times referred to as seasickness or carsick is horrible. It is something I have struggled with as long as I can remember. This illness is very common but it has ups and downs in its severity depending on the person. Each person symptoms are different and very in severity but all arise from the inner ear due to changes in a person’s sense of balance and equilibrium.

My motion sickness is at the highest level of severity. It has been impossible to prevent this even on a large cruise boat on the lowest level. The good news is I’ve learned how to manage the situation over the years. Here are a 5 tips/tricks that have worked for me depending on the situation.

  1. Be the driver: Make others aware of your sickness prior to departure and that way you can be the driver without causing any last minute issues.
  2. Patch: Try the patch for motion sickness,  which often is effective in preventing the problem.   I found this affected my vision but did work perfectly to avoid motion sickness. (You must choose which you want to deal with).
  3. Bean Bag: marine beanbag chair: I would have never believed it unless I tried this out myself. Put this in a car or boat to avoid feeling any motion at all. (see photo above).
  4. Selective Seating: If you are on a boat, choose the lowest deck in the center. If you are in a car drive or sit in the front. On a plane choose a seat over the wings. Never face backward from your direction of travel.
  5. Acupressure wristbands: These stimulate the acupressure points that control nausea. I have found these to be very helpful in the car while in the passenger seat.

Motion sickness is miserable and I am so sorry if you or someone you know is dealing with it. Making the most out of the situation is all you can do. Try to be prepared by dressing in loose clothing to prevent any pressure around your neck area. I always like to bring along ginger goodies such as ginger powder, cookies or candy. Dramamine has always caused serious drowsiness and make the trip a total blur, therefore I do not use. I am proud to say I did not get nauseous on our last 8 hour car ride nor on the several boating adventures with seas 4-5 feet high.  I’m wishing flat footing and safe shores for you too!

I hope my suggestions help you in your future travel.
