Don’t all farmers name their chickens?

Naming chickens is an important event on a chicken farm.  Our chickens are pets. We do not eat them and we have a desire to love them and care for them.  We name them.

When we first got our chickens, my daughter did not want to name any of the hens or roosters until they did something that would prompt their name. For example, “Dusty” was named that because his head began to get dark on the top and therefore looked “dusty”. He was aptly named.

At the beginning of our chicken farm efforts, many of our chickens went without names for weeks. Finally, something would happen and that chicken or rooster would end up being named but it often did not happen for days on end.

Amber Rose was name because of her amber feathers along her side and Amber, her sister for the same reason. Blue Ivy was pecking along the greenery when free ranging. Her feathers on the side were blue. Her sister was called simply “Ivy”.

Sylvia was named so because she had silver feathers on her neck and Goldie was given her name because of the gold feathers on her back. One thing we did was called all 5 Rhode’s Rhode because we could not tell them a part.  Sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do. Right?  Naming chickens is a part of the process of raising them. What names have you chosen for your chickens and roosters? Please share your names and the reasoning behind those names.

Names for Roosters:  Ben, Buster, Biggun’ , Jordy, George, Jack, Jake, Mr. Man, Boy,  King, and yes, “Kong!” or “King Kong”…. What names would you add?

Names for Hens:  Babe, Babs, Sissy, Sister, Sassy, Queen, Princess, Pearl, Olive, Rhoda, …What names would you add?k Visit our Facebook page @chicksdownsouth and tell us!  We really, really want to hear from you!  #farmlife, #farming, #chickens, #chickenlife
