There are people in our lives who really, and I mean really make a difference. They add color where there was gray. They bring about smiles where the mouth is down. When an event occurs, they bring something even though it required nothing of the kind. Things are straighter when they are around, neater when they leave and more full when they’ve come.
I think of the book ” The Wide and Lonesome Prairie“. In it we read about a beautiful and lovely “grandmother-type” named Mrs. Kenker. While she has the milky-white and smooth skin of a granny, her inside countenance is dark. She is indeed self-centered and in the end, a serial thief which everyone finally encounters. On the outside, it looked as if she was engaging, “taking part”, lovely and happy but when viewed with clear lenses, she was selfish, ungiving and really only “joining in” for her benefit.
It would behoove each one of us to take a serious look at ourselves to be sure that we are living examples of our faith and not just “joining in”. To “join in” would be one who just participates, comes and leaves. Instead, we want to be one who adds color where there is gray, brings about smiles in a crowd and contributes something to the event even when no one asked. We want to truly make a difference. Don’t we? Do we?
Living it out….
