I don’t know if you’ve ever had the opportunity to raise baby chicks but truly, there is just something really special about being the “mama” of a small flock of them. What I know about it is that they completely depend on me to care for them. If I do not do what is needed, they will die. I must pay careful attention to the warmth in their brooder, the water level and not only the amount of food but the type of food given to them.
Yesterday, I bought twenty baby chicks from the feed store. To enrich my flock, I added 5 of each kind to the run. So now, I will have Americaunas, Buff Orpingtons, Silver Wyandotte, Rhode Island Reds, and Sex Links. I’m so excited!
Having laying hens, the food I’m using is laying mash with cracked corn. These babies cannot eat cracked corn at this time, so it is my responsibility to be sure that I have nutrients for the babies. Yes, I bought a 10 lb bag of feed just for the babies and that’s just a start.
And just think, if we care for animals, how much more should we be attentive and care for each other?
Love on everyone.
Josie
