Back in February, I ordered over 2 dozen chicks. It was my first experience ordering by mail and in my little mind, they would be delivered in short order. Little did I know that they would be incubated and take at least twenty-one days to hatch and then, would they be shipped from a hatchery in Texas.
So, Tuesday, I got an email telling me that my babies would be delivered within 72 hours from Ideal Poultry out of Texas. I began watching for the postman as early as Wednesday. Nothing occurred on Wednesday and then I watched the mailman ride past the mailbox on Thursday but low and behold there was a message on the answering machine saying they had called 3 times and were beginning to get worried about the baby chicks! They were delivered to to the branch post office and I would need to come there to get them. Immediately, I jumped in the car and went off to the post office to pick up the chickies!
By 5:00 p.m., they were out of their small paper crate with holes and into their new box. They had been fed, watered and held. What a life these babies will have on this mini-farm.
The chicks are smaller than my fist. They are truly one day old birds and here are the breeds: Silver Wyandotte, Buff Orpington, and Jersey Giants. They are very tiny now but in about 3 months they will be the size of a football and in 6 months, they each will produce an egg a day. I’m sooooo excited!
Let the naming begin… (Oh, if you have any suggestions for names, let me know on our Chicks Down South Facebook page, but remember… All of my chickens have “Nannette” ( My official name) as their middle name so if you name one “Josie” for example, her name will really be “Josie Nannette”. Ha!
