Day 4-(Writing 31 Days Project)So who was Mother Goose? Jiggety Jog! There are at least 370 rhymes attributed to her and some dating back to as early as 1637. According to Robin Wilson, the first printing of her work was in 1697 but it is really unclear who she was and the details surrounding her life. Things are clearly sketchy. To find out some details, you might want to click on over to Mother Goose.com for more.

At Write 31 Days, a site begun by the author of The Nester and now run by Crystal Stine, we’ve been challenged to “focus” on our task and as I begin to do just that, I fondly think of ole’ Mother Goose.

Most everyone knows of a Mother Goose nursery rhyme. “A ticket, a taste a red and yellow basket”, Baa, baa black sheep, have you any wool?”, “ I had a little hen, the prettiest you’ve ever seen.” and more.

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig, Home again, home again, jiggety-jig. To market, to market, to buy a fat hog, Home again, home again, jiggety-jog. To market, to market, to buy a plum bun, Home again, home again, market is done.

This Mother Goose nursery rhyme offers a forward approach to life. The words “Jiggety Jog” have been of debate regarding their meaning and with the onset of the internet, this debate has broadened.

“Jiggety jog” in the Mother Goose rhyme is as clickity clack, clickity clack” or “get a horsy, get a horsy, ”. It’s sort of non-sensical and silliness but at the same time says, “move forward”, “move on” and the like.

Being a Mother Goose nursery rhyme, it does not have to make sense. It is part of a genre that was written for small children to dream and recite and for grandmothers to read and listen to babes mumble through the day. Mother Goose does not tell us this of her work, rather, her work speaks for itself. She had her own voice, her own flavor, her own genre.

As writers, that is what each of us do. By inspiration of the Creator and as we daily write, we create our own style, format, and voice. So onward writers. Write like you mean it.
