Do Chickens Like Selfies?
Chickens vary in personality like other animals. Notice I did not compare them to people because I do not think chickens are, for the most part similar to people. Now I did say “for the most part” because there are some small areas where chickens and people could have some similarities but that’s another article for another day. (There are those people out there with “bird brains for example! (LOL) Chickens are really a breed of their own and they all act very similar and yet there are some characteristics in personality that can see seen across the spectrum of chickenhood.(Is that even a word or did I just make that up? Ha!)
Some chickens are easier to get to stay still, eat certain things and even to let you walk up and maybe talk to them. For example Rhodie, the one in the selfie. She’s happy to let me take her picture every single time. No kidding. She’s curious and interested in what’s in my hand and might even lean in to see it more closely. She allowed me to reach down and pick her up just before we took our snap shot. Some of my Rhode Island Reds squat if I come near showing a docile characteristic. Not Rhodie. She simply sort of waits for the pick-up and then nestles in my arms. She’s warm, friendly and about the time she starts looking around, we take selfies.
Now, this is not true of my Silver Wyandotte chickens. Not one of those beautiful birds, even Julliette, my oldest gal, will allow me to simply reach down and pick her up. They tend to be more nervous and twitchy. They run around and yet return to my area in search of something I may have in my hand or pocket. They are not dumb by any stretch. They are simply not as warm and friendly as Rhodie.
So, regarding selfies. If you want to get a good close up of you and your chicken, you’ll need to choose one who chooses you. It makes for a good memory down the road too.
