It’s special. It’s adorable. It’s memorable. It’s fun. It’s a photo op. It’s your child’s very first haircut. There will not be another first cut and oh how bitter-sweet that is.

We waited until our Precious-One was a year before cutting his hair. He has ultra fine golden blonde hair and to tell you the truth we could have let it grow a little longer. The deciding factor was when we found out both grandmothers and a set of great-grands could come along for the ride. An appointment time and date was set and boy were we excited.

I researched online for 1st haircut ideas, but didn’t find much of anything to speak of. Disappointed, I thought it important for me to create my own list and so I did.

First off, going to a true barber shop would be a starting idea. Then it came to mind to invite whichever family members could attend and of course, take a camera ( or two!) I knew each photo taken would be a memory and story later in life.

We were unsure as to how the baby would react to the shears, combing, a robe and pump-up chair. We purposely planned for DanielBoy to get his haircut that day too. This was for-sure would make him feel relaxed if Daddy was getting a haircut too.

Upon arrival we showed our one year old around and let him explore a bit. In no time he seemed comfortable and relaxed. Daniel sat in the chair and placed him on his lap in front of him, and the haircut began. He was definitely unsure about the whole thing but with tons of family around cheering him on, it all worked out perfectly. The photos turned out better than expected. Catching all the facial expressions was so much fun.

Here are a few tips for a successful first haircut

  • Play hair stylist at home: Sit your child down in a chair and drape a towel around him. Pretend you are styling his hair. Make it fun and giggle about it.
  • Bring some distractions when you go to the barber shop: Have a snack on hand in case the little one gets antsy in the seat or bring along some light up toys he’s never seen to distract him from the barber’s work.
  • Pick the perfect time: Schedule the haircut right after a nap

If too much gets cut off or you do not like it remember IT WILL GROW BACK!
