After the storm is over

After the storm is over Shaq and BeBe finally come out to access the damage from Hurricane Hurmines.

Shaq and BeBe would not come out of their coop this morning. They didn’t know what had occurred outside of their run.

After The Storm

Before the rain and wind hit Florida yesterday, precautions were taken with the chickens. Hermine, the hurricane was on the way so I knew we had to prepare. All of the runs were checked, ladders were removed, and every possible obstruction was taken away.  When the winds picked up I wouldn’t worry about the safety of the chickens.

In order to ensure their security, all of the coop openings were screwed shut to avoid any flapping doors which could catch a foot or hit a head. The yard art and decorative things on the grounds were laid flat all except the big metal chicken which is held with a block. It was still standing this morning.

Hurricane Hermine slammed the Gulf Coast of Florida during the night. I didn’t hear a thing. The last I thought about the storm was when I took the dogs out for a walk at about 10:00 p.m. At that time there was mist in the air and a little wind but nothing to worry about. We are on the adjacent coast in North East Florida from where the tropical storm came.  The rain bands from the hurricane swirled around us beginning at about 2:00 a.m. It was windy but thankfully only 2 huge limbs and one tree fell. We were fine. ( See my article about The Clean Up- A Family Affair)

There was confirmation for me that securing doors was a good thing. Putting away all items that could have potentially sailed in the air was important. Placing food and water in the coops would have been definitely a part of the plan if the storm would have lasted into the next day. In this case, we were told the storm would have passed by morning light.

The clean up was relatively simple having a strong and able son-in-law in help with the follow-up! Thanks Daniel!

Take care everyone.
