Today, Kristie and I visited and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a fabulous event for us as we took photographs and enjoyed the sites of New York City.
The Brooklyn Bridge was designated by the National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. It opened in 1883. Its unique design and construction has been viewed and reviewed by multitudes of people.
According to the government website more than 120,000 vehicles travel across the lanes with 4,000 pedestrians and 3,100 bicyclists crossing the bridge every day.
The bridge spans across the East River in New York City and when it was opened thousands came to see the ribbon cutting which was presided by President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor, Grover Cleveland. At the time, it was the largest suspension bridge ever built.
We especially love the history of the bridge because on the first ride over the bridge, a “chick” took a lap with the wife of the bridge builder! That’s right! On May 24, 1883, Emily Roebling, the wife of John Roebling was given the first ride over the bridge carrying a rooster! At that time, this incredible build was named the “eighth wonder of the world”!
We’re all about joining with the chickens so today, Chicks Down South walked the bridge and had a marvelous time! We only wish we could have brought Amber Rose and Buster, our hen and rooster with us! Ha!!!
Here are a few tips if you are planning on taking on this beauty.
