This morning I heard a young mother lamenting about Christmas and wondering how she was going to have enough money to have her auto repaired and pay for Christmas toys. I know of this person through a turn of events and understand her father to be an alcoholic who does not work. She has no husband on the scene and works at an established business in the city with a fairly consistent salary. My understanding is that she does not qualify for public assistance due to her consistent work but has trouble meeting ends, being a single mother in her circumstance. In effect, she has 3 children, 2 actual kids and an alcoholic dad so her heart is often grieving and her load heavy.
My care goes out to her. My heart is tender for her children. I want to help her this Christmas. I will do this and not for me but for Jesus’ sake. The Holy Spirit inside of me encourages me to do “something”. The Holy scripture says if we give a simple drink of water to someone we’ve done it unto the Lord. I want to give the Lord something through these people and truly, nothing “I’ve done lest I boast”.
What could you do in your area of influence? Who could you help? Could you bake a cake for a shut-in? Would you be able to buy a series of gifts for a needy family in your town? Will you drop off razors and shaving cream to the downtown mission this season? Is there a person in the rehab or hospital that you could visit? Could you mail a special card to someone needing encouragement? Whether small or great, what could you do and will you do it?
While we should be doing this all year round, the Christmas season is a special time. Hearts are tender, emotions are sometimes raw, feelings are reminiscent of days gone by and needing affirmation at this time. Christmas is the perfect time to do for others. I hope that you will do “something”.
