Aldi Food Market- This German-owned chain is one of the largest in the world. In fact, they also own Trader Joe’s. Aldi is smaller than most grocery stores but big on uniqueness and its no frills, atmosphere allows for serious discounts.
Selling primarily its own privately branded items, helps keep the cost low. There is no shelving therefore there is no restocking. Everything is displayed in the container it is delivered in. Pallets, boxes, and containersare exposed. Everything is self serve therefore it has low costs which equals lower grocery bill for the consumer. Customers must bring in reusable bags or purchase Aldi bags. Shopping carts are paid for by a twenty five cent deposit. Once you return the cart you receive your money back. This allows for less staff to fetch the carts, which is cost effective.
Your time is now to stop all the fuss about couponing, specials, BOGOs, the end of an item clearance and all the “deals”. ALDI is making each shopping trip simple with fewer choices at an extremely low cost. This discounted dream shopping experience is new to the U.S. but definitely growing. Who needs all those choices the supermarket shelves offer? When you want groceries for dinner, head to ALDI which offers little distractions and huge discounts.
Aldi has over 10,000 stores in 18 countries, so I would say they have the food market industry down pat and are growing quickly.
For first impressions, I was blown away by the low prices. The shopping cart deposit was a bit strange for me, but once I was aware, it became “normal”. Aldi made it simple and without a huge extravagant shopping experience. The brands were not familiar to me either but were worth a try at those prices. They did provide bags at a cost or customers could bring their own. They also have packaging boxes at entrance for shoppers convenience. Aldi does not match prices but most of them would be hard to beat from what I saw.
