Using Bible Verses for Good Not Evil

When logging onto social media outlets, we all see quotation and scripture overload on our feeds. From comical to serious, they are posted everywhere.  Sometimes they are so fitting for so many that certain ones are posted over and over and often become viral due to the truths in them.

Many times as people go through different and various situations in their lives, they post scriptures probably seeking to help them through that particular hardship.  I say nothing wrong with that but what does bring forth concern are posts using scriptures that tend to call evil good and passing it along as “God’s idea” using scripture to back it. That is plain wrong and God will one day have His way with any of us who do this.  Right is right and wrong is wrong and never should scripture be used to wink at sin.

Sometimes scripture can be seen on coffee mugs, t-shirts, billboards and so on.   Scriptures are used on Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus, personal websites and the list goes on.  And, yes, the Bible is God’s promise to use, however we should be reminded that never should His Word be taken out of context. While I want to be strengthened by Christ and might post “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”Philippians 4:13, I must realize that I cannot live in sin and use that post to continue a sin. It is never a bad idea to realize that God can give strength to the weary and weak but what we must know is that He is righteous will not give strength for us to do wrong, commit sin and continue on a wrong path.

Often we might find that pulling out verses to help us in our current situation may work. It may be important to look up verses that apply to our condition and  we may discover ourselves trying to make that scripture or Bible verse fit into our sinful ways. This is where the danger occurs.  Then there is the ” twist a scripture plan”  by using part of it to meet an end for us and possibly allow us to continue in our sin.  But, in fact, the human race is sinful therefore granting our own wishes by twisting the scripture to excuse our wicked ways will only lead to uncertainty and the promised  path to self destruction.

Using Bible Verses For Good Not Evil

God has a plan for each of us but we have a free will must choose to allow Him to work in our lives. Scripture is there to help us move away from our sinful state, not continue in it. It is never His will that we use Scripture to fit our sinful lifestyle but instead to strengthen us  and cause us to repent from our wrong.

Believers as well as nonbelievers claim God’s Scripture for any number of reasons but God does not hear the prayer of a non-believer except upon request for forgiveness. Thus, can we assume that scriptures will not work for those who do not truly know God?  And yet, the scripture says it “rains on the just and the unjust” so we know that all people benefit from God’s graciousness.

As true believers in Christ we know that one isolated scripture cannot be God’s full truth.  It is a truth that intertwines with His will and the entirety of the Holy Word of God.

God has authored ancient scriptures for the purpose of our knowing Him.  As a result, we should use His Word to find out what He’s trying to say to us personally but never under any situation try to use scriptures as a pass for doing what is inappropriate or wrong.

May we each post on our hearts the desire to do His will for our lives and not post on social media our will to continue in our own self-set ways.
